Town of the Week: Saugerties

Saugerties. It’s the place folks keep telling me to move. It’s got a movie theater (a must for me), lots of vintage shops, yummy food, a nice downtown — nice shops, but not snooty — and a lot of solid old homes to choose from. It’s right on the Esopus Creek and has sweet mountain views.

I’m not sure why I’m not eager to move there. It feels to me like a cool neighborhood in Albany (yes, folks, there are a couple) — a kind of disconnected feeling. It may just be that there’s not some large institution anchoring it, something to make it more of a college town and less of a touristy-ish upstate New York town. It’s definitely less of a hippie theme park than Woodstock, and walkable, as you can see. I think folks who are looking to move permanently from NYC to a small upstate town should definitely check it out, and I also think it’s a fine spot for a country house; you could still go out for Moroccan food and pick up a vintage beaded sweater while you were hiding your Greek revival farmhouse.
